Today, molecular medicine specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology presented the results of their new research project on the development of new methods of therapy to restore muscle performance and capabilities – mainly the project focuses on restoring muscle tissue that has undergone paralysis and degradation. It is known that specialists were able to develop a new optogenetic technique for such restoration, which is based on the activation of the nerves responsible for the production of certain proteins involved in muscle movement – such a technique can become really promising in the very near future!
In other words, experts have found a way to re-activate the “sleeping” or degraded nerves of muscle tissue, returning them the ability to produce proteins necessary for movement and other muscle properties – while, according to the description of the team itself, this recovery technique leads to smoother and less traumatic movements muscles, unlike traditional physiotherapy.
Preliminary tests on experimental mice demonstrated that the use of this optogenetic technique allows not only to help restore the nerve layer of muscle tissue, but also additionally “feed” prostheses and limb substitutes in those people who have them. In addition, this technique partly reveals some aspects related to the work of certain proteins in the brain, thereby deepening the understanding of the process of muscle and neural degradation – which can be reflected in the development of more effective methods of treatment against neurodegeneration.
So far, it remains to monitor the success of the team of specialists, since the preliminary results, for all their positive qualities, still require some rechecking and, in general, the need to be applied in isolation from the current reality of the experiment. However, if everything goes according to the plan of scientists, then very soon their optogenetic technique can find its application in modern practical medicine!
