Introduced a new nasal spray to deliver drugs directly to the brain

The natural barrier between the blood and the brain is an excellent defense system when it comes to confronting various viral bacteria. However, when it comes to introducing the necessary drugs directly into the patient’s brain, this barrier is already becoming a serious obstacle. That is why specialists from Washington University decided to tackle this problem, which resulted in the creation of a conceptual new system of ultrasonic advancement of drug nanoparticles passing through the nasal canal directly into the brain. The main feature of the new concept of "delivery" of nanoparticles is the use of an external ultrasonic agent, introduced separately.
Experts have developed the so-called FUSIN system, which is a system of focal ultrasonic intranasal delivery of drug nanoparticles through the nose, which in its work consists of three stages. First, the patient will use a nasal spray with nanoparticles falling into the nasal zone, then an ultrasonic agent, which is a mixture of microbubbles, is introduced into it. Further, using an ultrasonic wave of a certain frequency and speed, the researchers ensure that these micro bubbles react to it and increase in size, thus literally pushing the nanoparticles deep into the brain – in this case, closer to the brain stem.
By establishing the exact direction of the nanoparticles, experts achieve truly high-precision results that positively affect the ability to bypass the barrier between blood vessels and the brain and directly reach a specific area. In addition, specialists have ensured that when using the system it was possible to get rid of a variety of possible side effects.
Thus, the FUSIN ultrasound system has a really high efficiency and at the same time boasts very low financial costs both for its manufacture and application. It is this aspect that will allow it to become a full-fledged part of invasive medicine in the future and increase the chances of recovery for many patients who require the delivery of medicinal nanoparticles exclusively to the brain zone.
