Bioengineering and Spinal Disks: Assistance in Operations

Implantation of artificially created spinal and vertebral discs is already a relatively traditional method of replacing natural discs – especially in those cases when they are damaged without the possibility of restoration. And although such a model is really excellent in every sense, the use of natural biocomponents is more preferable – the team of specialists from the University of Pennsylvania, who managed to create a new technology for the formation of natural bio-disks from the original cartilage material in animals, believes the same way and judging according to the results, this is a pretty successful model!

At the moment, the development of specialists is still in the process of preparation and refinement, but the results demonstrate that these natural vertebral discs from goat stem cells really integrate perfectly into the finished matrix. These discs are created by transforming stem cells into a cartilaginous structure, which in turn is superimposed on the “scaffolds” of the finished cartilaginous structure of the spine – and with the help of hydrogels and polymers interconnected, this structure then forms a single unit, effectively dissolving polymer residues.

Some time ago, tests of this technology of bio-disks in rats were carried out and the results showed that even after twenty weeks after the operation, the subjects demonstrated an excellent level of motility, both large and fine – these designs were called DABS and are currently undergoing a second test phase.

The presented model for creating biological spinal discs and cartilage joints is a really promising segment in the development of practical and surgical medicine. However, it is worth noting that not all experts agree that such a technology will develop rapidly, at least because such tests require a significant amount of time and resources.
